Well, here we are. September. The month when things seem to begin again. Kids going off to school remind me of my own hopes and dreams when I was young. And my hopes that my own kids will find their way- not make some of the stupid mistakes that I have made, and find their way to a great future.
As most of us know, life doesn’t always unfold in the way we want. We make our share of mistakes. We suffer through some stuff not entirely our fault. Some of us pay dearly. Some of us skate on by and plain get lucky. Its not fair. But its life. I wish I could rewrite some things, but that’s just not going to happen. So, we do the best we can with what we’ve got.
When I open the worship with “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here” It is more than a quotable quote to me. Those words mean everything to me. Regardless of who you are- rich or poor, or somewhere in between. Regardless of color or sexual orientation, or just simply wondering who you are and if you are going to make it to the end of the month- you have a place here. You have support. You have friends and you have a future. – A future we may have to figure out together- but that is ok. You can count on me to understand- to not judge and to help find a better tomorrow.
That is our job as a church. To offer love, support and guidance. To not judge the mistakes made, or the opportunities squandered. Life can absolutely suck- and it does for all of us at some point in time. Doesn’t matter. What matters most are those special friends in the worst of times. First Church in Pembroke should be one of those friends. Let it be so
