This month First Church is highlighting
the Diaconate
The Diaconate at First Church The
Deacons of First Church are dedicated to serving Christ by serving the Church
and its members. The ministry of the Diaconate goes back biblically to Acts
5:1-6 and Corinthians 12:4-11 which tells of the 12 Apostles choosing Christ
followers of good character, full of wisdom, and the Spirit to serve tables.
This original Hospitality meaning has grown to include a number of critical
roles within the physical church, such as the relationships between the Pastor
and Congregation and the religious celebrations within the Church Sanctuary.
The responsibilities of a deacon vary between churches and are guided by the
organization s bylaws and the size of the membership. In some Christian
traditions, a deacon is ordained after years of study! Here at First Church In
Pembroke, our Congregational Christian tradition is simple; the church is run
by its membership, and everyone is encouraged to participate in some way.
Regular church members who desire to participate in the Diaconate can start by
simply attending our meetings on the second Sunday of each month following
church service. All are welcome!
Diaconate responsibilities include the following: (In no specific order.)
Support the Pastor and the Congregation in the spiritual life and
programs of the church.
Assist the Pastor in caring for church members.
Provision and distribute the sacraments and all other materials
pertaining to worship services.
Secure pulpit supply in case of the Pastor’s absence.
Manage the Card Ministry, which reaches out to members and their family
in prayer or celebration.
Usher before service and welcome new parishioners to the church.
Supervise the sponsorship of coffee and treats in Fellowship Hall
following Sunday Service.
Establish and administer the annual Diaconate Budget.
Solicit contributions and provide Diaconate funds to the Pastor to those
with special needs.
Oversee the worship music program, Music Director, and music
budget. Regular Roberts Rules meetings
to discuss and discern deacon duties within the context of our bylaws.
