SERMON by Pastor Matos:
THE FIRST CHURCH COVENANT
(This Covenant is a Spiritual contract between God and the members of this church in which God makes sure promises in exchange for certain behavior.)
We freely pledge together, in the Lord s name, United in love for one another, to strive to carry out His will as revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures. As God made a covenant with His people, we believe that by owning this covenant, we become part of God’s gathered people. We welcome all to worship with us and respect their diversity and freedom of conscience. We hold this to be the mission of First Church: walking together in Christian love and fellowship by following the Gospel, worshipping God, and working for the progress of knowledge, justice, peace, and equality through God’s will and the Holy Spirit. We work and pray for the transformation of the world into the Kingdom of God, and we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness and life everlasting.
Ephesians 1: 3-14 (NIV)
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
5 In love5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will
6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.
9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,
10 to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,
12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession to the praise of his glory.
Extra Information For Lines To The Left
AMP (v.3): Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!
AMP (v.4): 4 Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own] in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and separate for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him…
NLT (v. 5): God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure
NLT (v. 6): So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.
AMP (v.7): In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His gracious favor,
AMP (v.8): Which He lavished upon us in every kind of wisdom and understanding (practical insight and prudence),
AMP (v. 9-10): 9 Making known to us the mystery (secret) of His will (of His plan, of His purpose). [And it is this:] In accordance with His good pleasure (His merciful intention) which He had previously purposed and set forth in Him,
10 [He planned] for the maturity of the times and the climax of the ages to unify all things and head them up and consummate them in Christ, [both] things in heaven and things on the earth.
NLT (v. 11-12): 11 Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.
12 God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God.
