Sermon by: Pastor Joy Matos

CORRECT ANSWER OR GOOD SAMARITAN?

SUMMARY:

The sermon "Who’s the Neighbor" by Pastor Joy Matos focuses on a pivotal interaction between an expert in the law and Jesus, as recorded in Luke 10:25-29. Initially, the lawyer asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life and correctly answers his own question by citing the command to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart… and love your neighbor as yourself". However, seeking to justify himself, the lawyer then asks, "And who is my neighbor?". In response, Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan, where a man, robbed and left half-dead, is ignored by a priest and a Levite, but is compassionately helped by a Samaritan—a group generally despised by Jews. Jesus concludes by flipping the lawyer’s original question, asking, "Who of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?". The lawyer identifies the Samaritan as the one who showed mercy, prompting Jesus’ command: "Go and do likewise," which the sermon interprets as a call to be the neighbor to anyone in need, rather than categorizing people to determine who is worthy of help. This highlights that true neighborly love transcends social and religious boundaries, and while challenging, is achievable through reliance on the Holy Spirit.
