1.  Summary

God makes the church grow. He uses regular people to tell others the good news about Jesus. We do not need to make big, fancy plans to help the church. Instead, we just need to listen to God and do what he says. When we pray and follow God, he does amazing things that we cannot do by ourselves. If we say “yes” to God, he will lead us.

2. Sermon

  • The Spirit-Led Start at Antioch: The church at Antioch was not the result of a board-approved strategic plan. Antioch was the third-largest city in the Roman Empire, 400 miles north of Jerusalem, and known for its wickedness. Believers arrived there not as “church planters” but as refugees fleeing persecution. By simply sharing the good news with everyone—Greeks and Jews alike—the Lord’s hand brought growth. It was an organic movement born of faithfulness in hardship.
  • The Call to Mission: The identification of missionaries happened during corporate worship and fasting. It was the Holy Spirit, not a human committee, who initiated the call to “set apart Barnabas and Saul.” This process demonstrates that true mission begins with the church’s ears open to God’s voice before their hands are set to work.
  • Power Over Opposition: On the island of Cyprus, the mission faced direct spiritual resistance from the sorcerer Bar-Jesus. This moment marked a critical leadership shift in the narrative. Pastor Joy notes that from this point forward, the transcript changes the ordering of names from “Saul and Barnabas” to “Paul and Barnabas.” Paul, filled with the Spirit, exercised divine authority to blind the sorcerer, leading the Roman proconsul to believe.
  • The Turn to the Gentiles: When the message faced jealousy and abuse from leaders in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, Paul and Barnabas pivoted. They recognized that their rejection was the signal to turn their full focus toward the Gentiles, fulfilling the command to be a light to the ends of the earth.

The most transformational moment of the sermon is the use of the A.W. Tozer quote: “If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, 95% of what we do would go on and no one would know the difference.” For a 300-year-old church, this is a necessary ecclesiological wake-up call. It warns against the “religious habit” that can easily replace divine power in an established institution. This emphasis on spiritual vitality serves as a critical diagnostic for the congregation: is the church a monument to the past or a movement of the Spirit?
